Ultrasonic liposuction

Ultrasonic liposuction, or Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (UAL), is a technique where ultrasound energy is applied to the fat via the cannula (suction instrument).  The ultrasound energy breaks up and  melts the fat before it is suctioned out. 

Ultrasonic liposuction received great publicity a couple of years ago, but the excitement about it is already decreasing at this time. 

The energy which is applied has caused some undesirable side effects, including burns on the skin and elsewhere.  The ultrasound energy is a great deal more powerful than ultrasound used for imaging, and is more like the ultrasonic energy used for ultrasonic welding of plastics used in manufacturing.  Therefore I do not perform perform ultrasonic liposuction, but prefer tumescent liposuction.
